20 Industrial Relations or Employment Relations terms

In the first place, this glossary is dedicated to people who want to learn more about the vocabulary in Industrial Relations (multidisciplinary academic field that studies the employment relationship). It can sometimes be complex and that's why I decided to create it. It can also help people who don't know what is this program to learn about it. This glossary contains 20 definitions of terms, specific to the field of Industrial Relations. To finds my terms, I searched in "Wikipedia" "Industrial Relations", and I read the page to find useful words that I subsequently searched on the Internet. My definitions were all found on the Wikipedia website. I hope you'll learn more about the university program of Industrial Relations with my glossary.

Accounting

Accounting or Accountancy is the measurement, processing, and communication of financial and non financial information about economic entities such as businesses and corporations.
Example: We must do our accounting before hiring a new employee.

Accreditation
noun
Accreditation is a third-party attestation related to a conformity assessment body (such as certification body, inspection body or laboratory) conveying formal demonstration of its competence to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks (such as certification, inspection and testing).
Example: The bars have an accreditation to sell alcohol.

Arbitration
noun
Arbitration, a form of alternative dispute resolution, is a way to resolve disputes outside the courts. The dispute will be decided by one or more persons (the 'arbitrators', 'arbiters' or 'arbitral tribunal'), which renders the 'arbitration award'. An arbitration award is legally binding on both sides and enforceable in the courts.

Collective agreement

A collective agreement, collective labour agreement is a written contract negotiated through collective bargaining for employees by one or more trade unions with the management of a company (or with an employers' association) that regulates the terms and conditions of employees at work. This includes regulating the wages, benefits, and duties of the employees and the duties and responsibilities of the employer or employers and often includes rules for a dispute resolution process.
Example: We signed a collective agreement last week.

Employment

Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on contract where work is paid for, where one party, which may be a corporation, for profit, not-for-profit organization, co-operative or other entity is the employer and the other is the employee.
Example: My employment allows me to have a salary.

Employment agency

An employment agency is an organization which matches employers to employees. In developed countries, there are multiple private businesses which act as employment agencies and a publicly-funded employment agency.
Example: I asked an employment agency to help me find competent employees.

A firm is a commercial partnership of two or more people.
Example: The firm where I work is close to my home.

Globalisation
noun
Globalisation, is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide. Globalization has accelerated since the 18th century due to advances in transportation and communication technology. This increase in global interactions has caused a growth in international trade and the exchange of ideas and culture. Globalization is primarily an economic process of interaction and integration that is associated with social and cultural aspects. However, disputes and diplomacy are also large parts of the history of globalization, and of modern globalization.
Example: One of the causes of globalisation is technological progress.

Human resources

Human resources is the set of the people who make up the workforce of an organization, business sector, industry, or economy. A narrower concept is human capital, the knowledge which the individuals embody. Similar terms include manpower, labor, personnel, associates or simply people.
Example: Human resources is a vast field of study.

Industrial Relations

Industrial relations or employment relations is the multidisciplinary academic field that studies the employment relationship;[1] that is, the complex interrelations between employers and employees, labor/trade unions, employer organizations and the state.
Example: My university program is Industrial Relations.

Labour law

Labour law (also known as labor law or employment law) mediates the relationship between workers, employing entities, trade unions and the government.
Example: The labor law protect me.

Legal research

Legal research is "the process of identifying and retrieving information necessary to support legal decision-making. In its broadest sense, legal research includes each step of a course of action that begins with an analysis of the facts of a problem and concludes with the application and communication of the results of the investigation.
Example: You have to do your legal research before approaching the situation.

Management

Management (or managing) is the administration of an organization, whether it is a business, a not-for-profit organization, or government body.
Example: I'm managing the company.

Negotiation
noun
Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach a beneficial outcome over one or more issues where a conflict exists with respect to at least one of these issues.
Example: We had a negotiation with the employees

Organisation
noun
An organisation (is an entity – such as a company, an institution, or an association – comprising one or more people and having a particular purpose.
Example: Our organisation protect people.

Social dynamics
noun
Social dynamics (or sociodynamics) is the study of the behavior of groups that results from the interactions of individual group members as well to the study of the relationship between individual interactions and group level behaviors.
Example: I am studying social dynamics of American people.

Statistics
noun
Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data.[1][2][3] In applying statistics to a scientific, industrial, or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or a statistical model to be studied.
Example: I made statistics on the workload of employees.

Trade union

A trade union (or a labor union in American English), often simply called a union, is an organization of workers who have come together to achieve many common goals, such as protecting the integrity of their trade, improving safety standards, and attaining better wages, benefits (such as vacation, health care, and retirement), and working conditions through the increased bargaining power wielded by the creation of a monopoly of the workers.
Example: With the help of my trade union, I was able to assert my labour rights.

A group of people who support each other.
Wage
noun
A wage is the distribution from an employer of a security (expected return or profits derived solely from others) paid to an employee. Like interest is paid out to an investor on his investments, a wage is paid (from company earnings) to the employee on the employee's invested assets (time, money, labor, resources, and thought).
Example: My wage is higher than last year.

Workplace health promotion

Workplace health promotion is the combined efforts of employers, employees, and society to improve the mental and physical health and well-being of people at work.[1] The term workplace health promotion denotes a comprehensive analysis and design of human and organizational work levels with the strategic aim of developing and improving health resources in an enterprise.
Example: The workplace health promotion helps employees to have a better life at work.
